What Is Technographic Data? A Practical Guide for B2B Sales and Marketing

Technographic data describes the technology a company uses: its software, cloud platforms, hardware and digital tools. For B2B sellers, it answers a simple but powerful question before the first call: what does this account already run?

What technographic data includes

A technographic profile is usually built at the company level and then linked to the people who buy or manage those tools. Typical fields include:

  • Installed software such as CRM, ERP, marketing automation, help desk and HR systems.
  • Cloud and infrastructure, for example the hosting provider, content delivery network or cloud platform.
  • Security tools like identity management, endpoint protection and email security.
  • Web and e-commerce technologies such as the content management system, analytics tools and storefront platform.
  • Hardware and networking including servers, storage, switches and wireless systems.

When this is combined with firmographic data (industry, size, revenue, location) and verified contacts, you get a list of the right companies and the right people inside them.

How technographic data is collected

Providers use a mix of methods. Some technologies leave visible signals on a company's website, such as scripts, tags and DNS records. Others are identified from job postings that mention specific tools, public case studies, partner directories, product reviews and surveys. Good providers combine several sources and refresh them regularly, because companies add and replace tools all the time.

Five ways B2B teams use technographics

1. Competitive displacement

If you sell an alternative to an established product, a list of companies using that product is your most focused prospect list. Your message can speak directly to the switch: migration support, cost comparisons and missing features.

2. Integration-led selling

If your product integrates with Salesforce, HubSpot, Shopify or another platform, companies already on that platform are pre-qualified. You can lead with the integration instead of a generic pitch.

3. Better segmentation and personalisation

Two companies of the same size can have very different needs depending on their stack. Segmenting campaigns by technology lets you tailor case studies, examples and offers to what the prospect actually uses.

4. Services and consulting

Implementation partners, managed service providers and consultancies use technographics to find companies on platforms they specialise in, for example AWS, Microsoft Dynamics or SAP.

5. Market sizing

Counting how many companies in a region or industry use a given technology helps product and leadership teams size a market before investing in it.

Technographic vs firmographic vs intent data

Firmographic data tells you who a company is: industry, size, revenue and location. Technographic data tells you what it uses. Intent data suggests what it may be researching right now. The three work best together: firmographics define your market, technographics find the best fit inside it, and timing signals help you prioritise.

What to look for in a technographic data provider

  • Coverage of the technologies you care about, not just the most popular ones.
  • Freshness: ask how often detections are refreshed and how outdated records are removed.
  • Contact-level data: knowing a company uses a tool is only useful if you can reach the decision-makers.
  • Verification: emails and phone numbers should be checked before delivery.
  • Flexible filters, including combinations such as "uses Salesforce and AWS but not HubSpot".
  • A free sample so you can test quality in your own campaigns.

Getting started

Start with one clear use case, such as users of a competing product in your strongest region. Request a sample, run a small campaign, and compare response rates with your usual lists. Our technology data covers 69 technology categories, from CRM software users to cloud platform users and security software users.

Frequently asked questions

Is technographic data accurate?

Accuracy depends on the provider and how often data is refreshed. Detections from multiple sources, regular updates and contact verification all improve reliability. Always test a sample first.

Can I target companies that use one tool but not another?

Yes. Good technographic lists support combinations and exclusions, which is useful for competitive displacement and integration campaigns.
